Spring cleanup: Muddy Creek, leaf collection, street sweeping and city-wide cleanup coming in April

Spring has (technically) arrived and with it spring cleanup.

Muddy Creek cleanup

On Saturday, April 7, join the cleanup led by the North Liberty Tree & Storm Water Advisory Board, Boy Scout Troop 216 and Cub Scout Packs 216 and 275 to remove debris along Big Muddy Creek and the bike trail. The clean up is held annually in observance of Keep America Beautify Day.

Join in by meeting at the North Liberty Community Center north parking lot at 9 a.m.

Curbside leaf collections

Spring leaf collection is scheduled to start Monday, April 2, 2018, and will run through Friday, April 20.

To have your leaves collected, rake them within two feet of the street by 7 a.m. on each Monday. Crews will collect them by Friday. Please don’t bag your leaves or mix them with stick, branches or other yard waste, or any other materials.

To speed collection, please avoid placing piles near street signs or utility poles, and avoid parking in front of leaf piles.

This service is free and weather depended.

After the curbside collection ends, residents have a few options to dispose of leaves:

  1. Taken to citywide cleanup on April 28 at the public works facility
  2. Put in yard waste bags for Johnson County Refuse, collected on your regular trash and recycling day
  3. Taken to Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center,  300 Hebl Ave. SW, Iowa City

Street sweeping

During the month of April, crews will be out cleaning streets. You can help by parking off of the street when possible. Street sweeping is dependent upon weather conditions.

Spring Cleanup Day

Spring Cleanup Day, for disposal of large items, brush, tires, batteries and other waste, is scheduled for April 28, 2018, for 7 to 11 a.m. at the Public Works Facility, 620 Calvin Street.

The cost for this service is included in monthly city utility bills and is for residents of North Liberty only (please be prepared with a water bill stub or driver’s license). Assistance will be provided to the elderly or handicapped; please call City Hall (626-5700) to make arrangements. You can read more about what will and won’t be accepted here.
