Shade & Ornamental Trees

Autumn Blaze Maple: A very popular tree known for its brilliant red-orange fall color and rapid growth rate. Oval to rounded crown with ascending branches and a central leader at maturity. Able to grow in most soils.
Zone: 4-7 Height: 50-60 ft. Spread: 40 ft.

Red Sunset Red Maple: Very dense, upright crown form. Thick, glossy leaves persist late into fall and turn orange-red to brilliant red. Long display of fall color. Adaptable to different climates, but requires acid soil. Tolerates partial shade.
Zone: 4-7 Height: 50 ft. Spread: 30-40 ft.

White Oak: Broad, round, dense head. Spreading branches. Light gray, flaked bark. Foliage emerges grayish-pink changing to dark green. Purplish-red fall foliage. Some leaves remain on tree for winter interest. Prefers moist, well-drained soils.

Bur Oak: Rounded, open form. Corky branches create an interesting appearance. Vigorous. Yellowish-brown to purplish fall color. Tolerates a wide range of soil types and air pollutants.
Zone: 3-8 Height: 60-80 ft. Spread: 60-80 ft.

Pin Oak: Broadly pyramidal. Dense branching habit. Branches droop slightly. Glossy, deep green leaves are finely divided. Scarlet fall color. Leaves hang on into winter.
Zone: 4 Height: 60-70 ft. Spread: 40-50 ft.

Northern Red Oak: Pyramidal when young becoming broad, round-topped with maturity. Dense, lustrous foliage turns red to reddish-brown in fall. Fruit is an acorn. Transplants easily. Fastest growing Oak. Good street or landscape tree. Well-drained, acid soil and full sun.

River Birch: Cinnamon brown exfoliating bark. Dark green summer foliage. Golden yellow fall color. Interesting winter effect. Adaptable to urban conditions, resistant to Bronze Birch Borer.
Zone: 4-8 Height: 40-70 ft. Spread: 30-40 ft.

Eastern Redbud: Graceful, ascending branches produce new growth of reddish-purple color. Yellow-green fall color. Flowers at a young age (4-6 yrs.) Flowers rosy-pink in April-May. Full sun or light shade. Grows well in moist soils. Effective as a small specimen tree.
Zone: 4-9 Height: 20-30 ft. Spread: 25-30 ft.

Prairifire Crabapple: Excellent disease resistance. Upright, spreading structure becoming rounded with maturity. Attractive red-maroon foliage, aging reddish-green. Crimson buds open to bright pinkish-red, single flower. Fruit is dark red, 3/8 to ½ inch and very persistent. Blooms later than most crabs.
Zone: 4 Height: 20 ft. Spread: 20 ft.

Chanticleer Pear: Upright, pyramidal form. White flowers followed by crisp, glossy, green summer foliage that turns outstanding reddish-orange to plum in fall. Small, green persistent fruit. Thornless.

Greenspire Linden: Forms a shapely, pyramidal head. Rapid growing. Uniform growth. Leathery, dark green foliage. Small, pale-yellow flowers with a spicy fragrance. Yellow fall foliage. Good street tree.
Zone: 4 Height: 40-50 ft. Spread: 30-35 ft.

 

Shrub Descriptions

Black Knight Butterfly Bush: Dark purple flowers on 6-8" panicles. July through September.
Zone: 5-9 Height: 5-9 ft. Spread: 4-5 ft.

Red, White and Blue Butterfly Bush: A vigorous, multi-stemmed shrub with narrow cone-shaped bunches of red, white and blue flowers appearing on the tips of arching branches July through fall. This plant flowers on new growth; early spring pruning is recommended.
Zone: 5-9 Height: 5 ft. Spread: 5-8 ft.

Pink Delight Butterfly Bush: Clear bright pink fragrant flowers on 6-12" panicles.
Zone: 5-9 Height: 5-8 ft. Spread: 4-6 ft.

Red Twig Dogwood: White flowers. Porcelain-blue fruit. Green foliage turns reddish-purple in fall. Red stems. Shade tolerant.
Zone: 3-8 Height: 8-10 ft. Spread: 8-12 ft.

Yellow Twig Dogwood: Golden-yellow stems. Glossy, green foliage. White flowers and fruit. Reddish-purple fall foliage. Excellent winter effect.
Zone: 3-8 Height: 6-8 ft. Spread: 8-10 ft.

Dwarf Winged Burning Bush: The dwarf form of Euonymus alatus, this shrub is compact and rounded. Brilliant red fall color is even brighter if grown in full sun. Disease and insect resistant.
Zone: 4 Height: 5-8 ft. Spread: 4-6 ft.
Rose of Sharon - Ardens: Also known as Hibiscus or Althea, the Rose of Sharon shrubs have lovely tropical blooms in mid-to-late summer. Shiny, medium to dark green foliage emerges in late spring. Spring pruning encourages summer flowers.
Zone: 5 Height: 10 ft. Spread: 6-8 ft.

Pussy Willow: Upright. Large, silvery catkins before leaves appear in spring. Green summer foliage. Prefers moist soil.
Zone: 4 Height: 15-20 ft. Spread: 12-15 ft.

Goldmound Spirea: Bushy plant with bright yellow leaves in early spring; creamy yellow leaves the rest of the season. Pink flowers in June-July. Yellow fall color. Outstanding, small, colorful foliage plant for accent or contrast. Sun.
Zone: 4-8 Height: 18-24 inches Spread: 2-3 ft.

Snowmound Spirea: Excellent compact shrub with dense, dark bluish-green foliage and masses of pure white flowers in May. Red-yellow fall color.
Zone: 4-8 Height: 3-5 ft. Spread: 3-4 ft.

Dward Korean Lilac: Excellent uniform plant. Reddish-purple buds open to single, pale lavender flowers early June. Blooms at an early age. Green-yellow fall foliage. Good for informal hedges.
Zone: 3-7 Height: 4-5 ft. Spread: 5-7 ft.
