INFANT AND PRE-SCHOOL SWIM LESSON PROGRAM
In the infant and pre-school swimming program, we strive to bring quality aquatic education to those 6 months to 5 years
of age. Class sizes are small, usually four students per teacher, to provide adequate supervision and as much individual
attention as possible. The classes focus on using games and interaction as our teaching tools. We promote fun and
enjoyment of the water that will provide the child with basic skills, knowledge of personal safety and a love of swimming
to last a lifetime.
PARENT/TOT: (Ages 6 months – 3 years)
This thirty minute class gives the adult caregiver a chance to interact in the water, learn fun pool activities and proper
methods instructing the child. The main goal of the program is to acquaint the child to the aquatic environment with the
assistance of the parent. At least one adult must accompany each child. Click here for more info.LITTLE DIPPERS: (Ages 4 – 5 years)
This class begins the pre-school swimming program. To enroll in this program, students should feel comfortable
participating without the support of an adult and be at ease with the teacher making contact with student. The goal of
this class is to introduce submerging the face, assisted floating and self propulsion. Parents are not allowed in the
water or on the deck. Click here for more info.
BIG DIPPERS: (Ages 4 – 5 years)
This class is the second step in the pre-school swimming program. To enroll in these programs students should be
able to submerge their face and float on both their front and back with limited assistance. The goal of the program is to
learn to move in the water without assistance on both the front and back, and to incorporate basic kicking and arm
movement. Parents not allowed in the water or on deck. Click here for more info.
STARS: (Ages 4 – 5 years)
This class is the last step in the pre-school program. To enroll in this program students should be able to swim on
their front and back with coordinated arm and leg movement. The goal of this class is to introduce rhythmic breathing to
the combined front crawl stroke and to begin combining the back stroke. Parents not allowed in the water or on deck. Click here for more info.
AMERICAN RED CROSS LEARN-TO-SWIM PROGRAM
The Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program is designed to move participants systematically through stroke development and safety skills. To enroll, we recommend the participant has complete one year of grade school or the equivalent. The desired student/teacher ratio for levels I – IV is six to one. For levels V & VI the ratio is ten students to one teacher. Parents are not allowed in the pool or on the pool deck during swim lessons. If you would like to speak to your student’s instructor before or after class they will be available. If a question arises during class, please speak to the Site Coordinators or the Swimming Program Coordinator. During the first day of class all students will be evaluated to ensure they are enrolled in the best class for them. Based on the instructor’s judgment and class availability, students may be moved from the level they were originally enrolled in. Recommended minimum age for the Red Cross program is 6 years old. Click here for more info.
PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS
Private (one-on-one) swim lessons will be available in the evenings. Students will sign up for half hour lessons beginning at 5:30PM on either Monday or Wednesday nights. The fee is $48 for Residents and $53 for Non-Residents.
Participants should be aware that teachers may vary between lessons and make-up classes cannot be scheduled. The
minimum age for private lessons is four years. Private lessons are taught by North Liberty Aquatic Center staff, but are not
part of the Red Cross lesson certification program. Click here for more info.
