Oral History Project Back on Track

Homer Layton Riggle (1911-2002) featured in the Jan. 8 episode of the North Bend Historical Society's Oral History Project

In 2000, the  North Bend Historical Society began a community-wide project that its members hoped would continue for years. Using a digital video camera and an interview format, members of the group documented the life experiences of several long-time area residents. Erma Sentman, centenarian Eleanor Work, General Bob Sentman, Homer Riggle, Mel and Martha Schemmel and Clarence and Alda Hightshoe and  have all been interview subjects. With the help of the City’s telecommunications department, these stories were combined with photos and other historical documents, resulting in informative and entertaining programs that aired on the local access channel. The Society also makes the videos available for checkout at the North Liberty Community Library and has worked with the Johnson County Historical Society in negotiating archival space for these productions.

As each of the video productions illustrate, the Oral History Project provides vivid, living reminders of the past to family and friends of the subjects and to anyone interested in the history of North Liberty.

Four years since the inception of the project, the North Bend Historical Society continues to compile oral histories of North Liberty residents. We are seeking individuals who are interested in joining the North Bend Historical Society as well as subjects for future video interviews. If you have lived in the North Liberty area long enough to remember the Purple Cow or Bud & Walt’s Garage, we would love to hear from you. Please contact John Soukup at (319) 626-6399 (after 6:00 pm). For ideas on suitable topics for this project, please visit our website at www.North-Liberty.org/econdev/history.htm.
