North Liberty's Siren System

The City of North Liberty has a state-of-the-art emergency warning siren system. There are eight sirens located throughout the community that serve all developed areas of the City. The sirens are part of a county-wide emergency alert system, which is tied into the National Weather Service. If there is a severe weather warning in our area, the sirens will sound. The sirens can also be used in case of regional disasters or emergencies. Our siren system is tested once per month with an audible test on the first Monday of each month at 9:00 AM (in case of a holiday, the sirens are tested the following Monday). The test lasts only a few minutes.

North Liberty's sirens are unique within Johnson County in that they can be operated and activated individually or in groups by the local Police Department and Fire Department. Our law enforcement officers are equipped with two portable encoders, which they can use to set off the sirens in case of a localized emergency. The sirens can also be used as an emergency public address system: City officials can use a microphone to relay voice messages over the siren system. In case of an emergency such as a chemical spill, an extreme traffic accident or a gas leak, the Police or Fire Chief can use the system to address affected areas of North Liberty. City control of the sirens is critical in case the County activation system were to ever fail.

Our sirens are manufactured by Whelen, and are expandable to accommodate future growth in the community. The sirens are battery operated and can operate on their battery for as long as 14 days. Siren batteries are recharged via integrated solar panels on each of the siren poles.

If you have any questions about North Liberty's siren system, please contact the Police Department at 626-5724.
